Maarit Suomi-VäänänenHome

Maarit Suomi-Väänänen (1966) works as a filmmaker and media artist and graduated with an MA from the University of Art and Design, Helsinki 2008. Maarit combines the expressive forms of visual art to optical possibilities. Her short films ponder social and emotional themes as well as themes connected to identity and communication. Her video installations transform space by using  other media such as photography and objects.

Praised as fascinating and open to a multitude of interpretations, her awarded works have toured 36 countries, appearing in galleries and museums, at festivals, and on television. Some of the venues include:  IDFA in Amsterdam, World Wide Short Film Festival in Toronto, Rooftop in New York, Silhouette in Paris, Sarajevo Film Festival, Museum of Modern Art Kiasma in Helsinki, WARC Gallery inToronto and YLE Finnish Broadcasting Company. Her short film, Up And About Again, won the Best International Short Film Award at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal, Canada and was part of an exhibition at the Virserum Kunsthall in Sweden along with the work of renowned video artists, Bill Viola and Eija-Liisa Ahtila, among others.

Maarit’s work is distributed by Finnish Film Foundation, AV-Arkki Distribution Centre of Finnish Media Art, Videotheque Nomade Brussels and VTape Toronto and represented by Cinema Feast Montreal. Maarit lives in Helsinki and is one of only two artists awarded with a three years artist´s stipendium granted by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland in 2013.
